A Bird in the Hand

There's a difficult place on the ridge going up to the summit of the North Franklin Mountain. For years there was a strong branch there, a handle, people would grab hold of to help lift themselves up and get beyond that point safely. It came in handy for everyone. Then, one day I came upon it and  the handle was broke. But left us with this bird pointing its beak to an alternate route.

broken tree branch shows profile of a bird's head with one eye and its beak visible.

A deadly viper once bit a hole snipe's hide; But 'twas the viper, not the snipe, that died.
